Before their arrival in this country the Rajputs were aceus­tomed to murder their female infants; when wealthy men died, their widows were accustomed to ascend the funeral piic and burn themselves to death; the hill people in Orissa were accustomed to steal the children of their neighbours, fatten them, and offer them up in sacrifice 5 a class of rob­bers, called Thugs, were accustomed to murder many people every year in a seeret manner as offerings to please the goddess Bhavini; but as soon as the Fnglish gentlemen gol thoroughly aware that these and similar cruel practices were carried on in various places, they showed merey to the people of the land, and strenuously put down cach of these erneltics. Besides this, they gave liberty to all slaves, erected hospitals for the sick poor in every Zillah, and introduced the custom of giving pensions to persons who

had grown old in service.

The white men are not forgetful of merey and honor even in time of war. For example, vou ave aware that in 1857 the scpovs of Northern India(Brahmans, Raj­puts, and Mahomedans) became traitors to their salt, rose in rebellion against the Goverment, and muardered in cold blood many ladies and children: yet when the white wen got the upper hand again, they did not do any in­jury, even by way of retaliation, to the women and children of the rebels, but contented themselves with punishing those who had committed murder, and proclaimed forgiveness to all who had been guilty of inferior erimes. This is an illus­

tration of the mercy which they had learnt from Christianity.
