Moreover, whilst most of the people of this country shrink from everything that is new and content themselves with doing werely that which they are accustomed to do, white men have been set free from this slavery by the Christian religion, and regard no one employment in particular as the employment of their caste, but set themselves courageously to do every thing that requires to be done, whether they are accustomed to it or not. This liberty of action which they have acquired has doubtless also contributed to their prosperity.
Though their prosperity is partly owing to their intelligence, their energy, and their freedom, yet the honesty and sincerity which they have learnt from the Christian religion is certainly its principal cause.
However intelligent, diligent, and courageous they might be, vet if they were accustomed to break their word, their lot would be not prosperity but degradation.
Whatever other faults may be laid to the charge of the white men who have come to this country, magistrates, officers, and merchants, it is certain that as a class they cannot be charged with lying and deceit, and that they do not break their word. Their boast is not in their caste, but in their adherence to truth. Though they are not destitute of sagacity and policy, yet they are fond of the proverb that ¢ honesty is the best policy.” Tersons who know their honesty put confidence in them, and hence whatever business they undertake prospers, and in this way, in many instances, their honesty is their fortune. Ifany of them forgets his honor and becomes a liar and a cheat, the rest of the white men will not hold any intercourse with him, or even eat with him. Amongst them it is the liar that loses caste.
